Heather McAteer

We are delighted to bring you a collection of works on paper by Heather McAteer, following the recent launch of her book ‘Forests of Dreamland’ which features a number of these works.

Heather McAteer (b. Belfast, 1968) is a Northern Irish artist, based in Reading. Her current series of drawings on found paper are informed by ideas around memory, identity, and the ambiguous nature of home and belonging. Featuring images of where Heather grew up in Belfast, these works evoke a partial return to a homeland where a legacy of violence still lingers. Existing fragments of text and maps from pages of archival materials fuse her own personal mythology with other histories and narratives to present unexpected commentaries and reveal subtexts. The resulting unquiet landscapes suggest uncertainty and an ongoing negotiation with the past.
